Information has been released about a fatal collision on Highway 4 south of County Road E-57 (290th St) Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred at 12:20 pm. According to a preliminary report from the Iowa State Patrol, Wesley H. Bunnell, 71, of Glidden was northbound on Highway 4 when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the centerline and slowly drifted into the southbound lane.
Arthur Vanderwaal, 21, of Hull, had just turned into the southbound lane from E-63, driving a 2010 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer. Vanderwaal said Bunnell appeared to notice he was in the wrong lane and attempted to avoid a collision by heading for the southbound shoulder. Bunnell struck Vanderwaal’s truck on the driver’s side.
Bunnell was driving a 2017 Chevy Express van. He was wearing a seatbelt, but was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Iowa State Patrol is completing the investigation. The ISP was assisted by the Greene County sheriff’s office, the Iowa DOT, the Jefferson fire department and the Greene County medical examiner.
